Cablesoft Engineering, Inc. is a consulting firm specializing in telecommunications & broadband network engineering, design and testing. Areas of emphasis and expertise are cable television design and engineering; switched & VoIP telephony engineering; development of network engineering standards; optical design including course and dense wavelength division multiplexing; headend design; and Technical Due Diligence and FCC Proof of Performance testing including digital carrier testing for QPSK, QAM and 8-VSB (ATSC) carriers. CSEI can test downstream QAM carrier performance to full ANSI/SCTE 40 2004 specifications, and provide reverse plant QPSK and 16-QAM testing.

Cablesoft Engineering has past and continued involvement in broadband network engineering projects for cable television multiple system operators and independent telephone companies throughout the continental United States. Past engineering efforts include:

  • Chaired the CableLabs Outage Reduction Task Force, Plant Powering Subcommittee.

  • Won CableLabs award for best HFC design for mid-sized cable system.

  • Fiber optics network design for major cities including Cincinnati and Columbus, OH.

  • Work with TWC Houston Div. to reduce plant outages & improve network availability.

  • Planned & managed major plant/cluster upgrades for MSOs such as TWC, Harron, Helicon & Gemini Networks.

  • Performed special engineering projects for TWC corporate engineering, including 'plant powering at elevated voltages' and development of plant grounding & bonding standards.

  • Performed special engineering projects for Cablelabs including development of their computerized 'HFC Plant Reliability Model'.

  • Performed Technical Due Diligence and FCC POP testing for major MSOs and independent systems.

  • Current research into the impact of BPL (Broadband Over Powerlines) on the cable television network.

Background

CableSoft was formed in 1987 to develop and market Cabledesigner, a small system/network design software package. The company reorganized in 1990 as Cablesoft Engineering, shifting its primary emphasis towards engineering and testing. CSEI was fully incorporated in 1993. Although Cabledesigner 2.1 is no longer actively maintained or marketed, it is still a valid design package for small HFC networks and system extensions and is available as a free download. The program allows for HFC RF/AC network design including customized equipment files and full BOM generation. A ZIP file containing all necessary executable files, help files, and users manual in MS Word format is available on the 'downloads' page.
